Afikpo Organization, Inc
as is known now started in the Eastern part of United States of America
in the early nineties. There is an association that exists in Nigeria
for the Afikpo
Township Welfare Association ATWA with branches all through the country
of Nigeria. Though we share the same goals and aspirations, we are not
directly a branch. We are independent and autonomous in existence. There
have been collaborations on a few projects in the past. However, this Organization, Afikpo
Organization, Inc is a spin off a larger organization that was started
by Late Mr. Ifeanyichukwu Igwe in Queens New York. The scope of that
association/Organization was to include the Old Abakaliki Province of
Eastern Nigeria.
After Mr. Igwe left us, a few of the Afikpo
Indigenes in the area including his widow, Mrs. Nnenne Egwu-Igwe got
together at her residence to celebrate the New Yam festival in her back
yard for the first time. Present at this occasion were Greg Ota and his
family, Dr Austin Eleje and family, Mr. & Mrs. Sunday Echem ,Mr.
& Mrs. Agbi Okogeri , Enyinnaya Okogeri and his family, Aloysius
Amah and his family, Maduka Inya and a few others. The gathering was so
joyous and invigorating that we decided to have another one the
following year in New Jersey and invite sons and daughters of AfikpoUSA. At this time the New York/New Jersey had formally incorporated Afikpo
Development Association, Inc. Greg Ota was the President, Maduka Inya –
Secretary and Agbi Okogeri the Financial Secretary/Treasurer.
Shortly after that, the greater Maryland/Virginia/Washington DC organized themselves under Greater Afikpo Progressive Association (GAPA). A few more New Yam festivals were hosted by this group in Maryland.
The association has since born branches in Houston, Texas (Afikpo Family Union).
